Spring Soothers...

1/11/2015

A common question I'm asked this time of year is how to refresh tired, puffy eyes brought on by the new season.
Along with the age old sliced cucumber trick (it works) there's plenty more natural, home handy remedies to help.
For puffiness...
The astringent in slices of cool, raw potato helps to remove excess water from under eyes

The caffeine and tannins in cooled green or black tea bags helps to constrict blood vessels and stimulate circulation.

Chilled spoons
or a simple splash of cold water will help to restrict blood flow and decrease redness and swelling. I keep an eye wheat pillow in the freezer for those days I wake up puffy

For irritation...
Cooled Chamomile tea contains anti inflammatory and anti microbial properties which help to revive and soothe tired, irritated eyes (I use this on cotton pads through my facials )

The antioxidants and flavonoids in cucumber work to reduce redness, swelling and irritation

Apply any of the above for at least 5-10mins but preferably 20-30mins to get the full effect

*Please note: Any acute, abnormal and severe swelling or irritation around the eye area should always be checked by your doctor

It goes without saying that I’m a huge fan of anything skin and self-care. My drive lies within a belief that self-care should be seen as an everyday necessity, not a once in a while luxury. I have been lucky enough to experience the benefits of this first hand and have witnessed it many times while working closely with clients over the years – when we spend time on ‘me’, there’s much more to offer ‘we’. It’s win-win.
I understand that sometimes it’s hard to find the time/ resources to experience regular professional facial treatments, but that doesn’t mean you should be missing out on treating your skin, or yourself. There are plenty of easy ways to indulge your facial loving self at home, with ingredients straight from your pantry or fridge. Using a facial mask 1-2 times a week is a staple in a good skin care routine and can take as little as 5-10mins out of your day if you really want to do something other than lounge around while it’s on ( I wouldn't recommend housework, but that's mainly because I don't like it)

Here’s what you need to know to allow you to have fun creating your own facial masks from easily found ingredients.

Firstly. You’ll need a base for your mask, this is what will hold the mask together, and they can be used as a mask on their own, or mixed together. Depending on your skin type, choose from one of the ones listed below:

Banana (Every Skin)
Avocado (Dry/ Ageing Skin)
Greek Yogurt (Ageing/ Dull/ Congested Skin)
Paw Paw (Breakout Prone/ Thickened/ Dull Skin. No Sensitive)
Clays – Kaolin (Any Non-Sensitive Skin)
                Bentonite (All Skin Types)
                Pink (Sensitive/ Ageing Skin)
                Green (Oily/Acneic Skin)
Coconut or Olive Oil (All Skin Types)
Pure Aloe Vera Gel (sun damaged/ sunburnt & tight, dry skin)

Once you’ve decided on your base any combination of the following can be added to enhance and treat:

Lemon or Lime Juice for a softening, brightening effect
Honey is hydrating, antibacterial, tightening and contains many antioxidants
Blended Cucumber can help to soothe and freshen
Powdered Charcoal is great for detoxing hormonal skin
Bi Carb Soda is a gentle exfoliant that will soften, increase circulation and help to reduce inflammation
Cacao Powder rejuvenates and gives a great glow due to to the high anti oxidant content
Ground Nutmeg and Cinnamon are both high in antioxidants and gently exfoliate while soothing skin
Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice contains vitamin C to renew, zinc to help heal and will give a soft glow to the skin
Oatmeal is a fantastic anti inflammatory for reactive, sensitive skins

PLEASE AVOID ANY INGREDIENT YOU HAVE A KNOWN ALLERGY TO, AND ALWAYS PATCH TEST ON A SMALL AREA OF SKIN BEHIND YOUR EAR BEFORE USING ANY NEW INGREDIENT.

Once you have all your chosen ingredients it’s as simple as blending or mixing until a thick paste forms. Apply to freshly cleansed skin, avoiding the eye area and leave for 20-30mins. (NO LONGER THAN 10mins IF USING PAW PAW)

If using gritty ingredients you can gently massage over skin to exfoliate.

Remove with a warm, soft wash cloth or rinse off in the shower!

If you’re feeling really fancy you can wipe over with a natural apple cider vinegar ‘toner’ (1tsp Apple Cider Vinegar in 1 cup Water, dip in cotton pads) before following with your chosen facial moisturiser or oil.

Facials at home may not have that luxe feeling that you get from visiting your favourite Beauty Therapist but they can still deliver results, even if it’s just the thrill you get by realising yet another reason why avocados are the King of the World.

Enjoy xox

Facials... When & Why?

For those who weren't aware, your skin is your body's largest organ. With that in mind it's amazing what our bodies will communicate through our skin.
When treating skin concerns it's never a 'one size fits all' scenario.
Having a home skin care routine and incorporating regular professional facial treatments is vital to establish and maintain healthy, glowing skin.
Rule of thumb here is to enjoy a facial once every 4-6 weeks as this ensures we are treating skin within the natural time frame of cell turnover, thus promoting healthy growth.
For skin concerns or conditions wanting a quicker result, once a week, for 4-6 weeks is recommended, and once a month thereafter for maintenance.
Being a sufferer of 'un-agreeable' skin myself I understand the grief it can cause. The difference a regular facial and good skin care can make is astounding, and reverberates throughout the entire person...
If you're at your wits end trying to understand what your skin is saying, are suffering with chronic or acute skin conditions or you're just wanting some results driven advice and skin care, give us a call and book in for a skin consult.
Involves a thorough consult and skin analysis with a mini facial including steam.

✨ Skin Consult (20mins) ... $30✨

To get the full picture of what's going on with your skin from the inside out, why not book a skin focused naturopathic consultation with Innate Natural Health Clinic to coincide with your Skin Consult.
